that propels the former Soviet state towards the West and away from the grasp of Russia.
Parliament finally ratified an Association Agreement placing Ukraine on the path to EU membership.

The toughness of Russia’s stance does not stem from Mr. Putin’s calculations alone.

How odd it has been to read all those accounts of Europe sleepwalking into war in the summer of 1914, and how such madness must never happen again, against the background of the most misrepresented major story of 2014 – the gathering crisis between Russia and the West over Ukraine, as we watch developments in that very nasty civil war, with 20,000 Russian troops massing on the border
The West has been more or less secretively pouring into Ukraine to promote the cause:
not just to prop up its bankrupt government and banking system, but to fund scores of bogus “pro-European” groups
making up what the EU calls “civil society”.
When the European Commission told a journalist that, between 2004 and 2013, these groups had only been given €31 million, my co-author Richard North was soon reporting on his EU Referendum blog that the true figure, shown on the commission’s own “Financial Transparency” website, was €496 million.
The 200 front organisations receiving this colossal sum have such names as “Center for European Co-operation” or the “Donetsk Regional Public Organisation with Hope for the Future”

The UK and US governments have warned Russia not to use humanitarian assistance as a pretext for sending troops into eastern Ukraine.
Any such intervention would be "completely unacceptable and "viewed as an invasion of Ukraine",

Natos generalsekreterare Anders Fogh Rasmussen utlovade mer stöd till Ukraina när han höll en presskonferens i Kiev i dag.
-Vi kommer att fortsätta förbättra möjligheterna för Nato att samarbeta med Ukrainas soldater, sade Fogh Rasmussen.
Han uppmanade också Ryssland att dra sig tillbaka från gränsen och "inte använda en fredsbevarande styrka som ursäkt för krig". Han anklagade också Ryssland för att destabilisera Ukraina genom sitt stöd till separatisterna.

The West must understand that, to Russia, Ukraine can never be just a foreign country. Russian history began in what was called Kievan-Rus. The Russian religion spread from there. Ukraine has been part of Russia for centuries, and their histories were intertwined before then. Some of the most important battles for Russian freedom, starting with the Battle of Poltava in 1709 , were fought on Ukrainian soil. The Black Sea Fleet — Russia’s means of projecting power in the Mediterranean — is based by long-term lease in Sevastopol, in Crimea. Even such famed dissidents as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Joseph Brodsky insisted that Ukraine was an integral part of Russian history and, indeed, of Russia.
The European Union must recognize that its bureaucratic dilatoriness and subordination of the strategic element to domestic politics in negotiating Ukraine’s relationship to Europe contributed to turning a negotiation into a crisis.

Sevastopol, beläget på Krimhalvön i Svarta havet, blev på allvar indraget i kriget i slutet av september 1941
när Wehrmacht Armégrupp Süd under marskalk Erich von Mansteins befäl nådde fram till Krimhalvön.

Så långt ingår fortfarande en viss revolutionsromantik för dem som ser på, och vi glömmer gärna att det kort därefter brukar helt haverera i någon riktning,
eftersom demokrati à la Sverige sällan fixas på fem minuter.

De jure, Putin is right when he says Viktor Yanukovych is still president of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian constitution describes only three ways in which a president can lose his powers:
Death, resignation and a convoluted impeachment procedure that requires, at the end, the votes of three-quarters of parliament members.
Yanukovych is alive, he has not resigned and the impeachment procedure was not followed.
Instead, he was removed with a parliamentary resolution saying that he had "disengaged" from power.
The unconstitutional move gives Putin grounds to say Ukraine has experienced a coup d'etat.

The leaders of the protesters, many of whom now sit in government are urging states "who guaranteed Ukraine's integrity to fulfil their obligations" - in particular they are looking to the EU.
To a remarkable degree EU officials championed their cause. They stood shoulder to shoulder with the protesters.
They chose to ignore the fact that - tolerate or loathe him - Viktor Yanukovych was an elected leader.
